Sony has put up a rare insight into the motion capture process for PlayStation Vita title Uncharted: Golden Abyss by showing Nolan North (Drake), Richard McGonagle (Sully), Christine Lakin (Marisa), and Jason Spisak (Dante) acting out scenes from the game. John Garvin, Creative Director at Sony Bend, first shared some of his thoughts about the process of bringing Golden Abyss‘ plot to life:

I’m no stranger to writing, having written all the Syphon Filter games, but this title taught me some new tricks. By the time we started shooting in February 2011, I had gone through over 40 revisions, changing everything from setting, characters, names, dialogue and action. If we count all the in-game VO dialogue, we ended up with over 400 pages of script for Uncharted: Golden Abyss.

Of course, writing and performance capture was just beginning. What followed was an intense year of motion capture clean-up, animation, camera work, set building, lip-synching, prop building, editing, sound and music, by a team of over 50 artists working across five different studios. Warning: The second video contains spoilers.

Nolan North and Emily Rose on Uncharted 3 acting.

Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception hits PS3 next week, but if you can't get enough of Nolan North, the voice - and the physical acting reference - for Nathan Drake, then check out this new video from Sony, detailing some of the mo-cap challenges that spring up during production.

North also plays loads of other characters, apparently, during which chatter isn't safe for public consumption, according to Cinematic Productino Head, Taylor Kurosaki. There's some pretty hilarious grunting at 3.45, too. [SOURCE]

Who was there: From Naughty Dog there was creative director Amy Hennig, cinematic production lead Taylor Kurosaki, and lead cinematics animator Josh Scherr. These three were accompanied by members of the acting cast, including Nolan North, who plays Nathan Drake; Emily Rose, who does Elena Fisher; and Richard McGonagle, the actor behind Victor Sullivan.

What they talked about: While the panel was largely focused on the motion capture techniques behind the Uncharted series, one consistent theme was the importance of Naughty Dog’s collaborative spirit within everything the studio does. Hennig stressed early on that any member of the development team has to “check their ego at the door” when they come on board, which leads to an environment where staffers feel comfortable bouncing ideas off one another in a free-spirited work environment--an atmosphere that Naughty Dog has previously called “messy and chaotic in a good way.”

Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception has finally made its big debut and it’s looking to take as much of the spotlight away from some of 2011’s other big titles. While the trailer certainly did a great job of building hype, Naughty Dog thought they would let their fans take a look the behind the scenes and hear them talk about their hopes and fears when it came time to move past Among Thieves. Just released is a video that shows not only Naughty Dog’s studios but also features Nolan North in motion capture action.

In the video, members of the Naughty Dog development team talk about the praise that Uncharted 2 received and how grateful they are for the numerous Game of the Year nods they received. Uncharted 2 was certainly a fantastic game and deserved all of its accolades, but now that some time has passed it was time for the team to look towards the next entry in the series and where they wanted to take Nathan Drake.
