Sony has been cooking up a film adaptation of the hugely popular Playstation 3 videogame Uncharted: Drake's Fortune for some time now. Following The Fighter, David O. Russell was briefly attached to direct, but departed the project due to creative differences. Less than two weeks ago, it was revealed that Sony, along with producers Avi Arad, Ari Arad, Charles Roven and Alex Gartner, selected Neil Burger to write and direct the first big screen adventure of Nathan Drake. In an interview regarding the Blu-ray and DVD release of his latest film, this spring's hit Limitless (in stores Tuesday, July 19th), Burger talked exclusively with IAR about his take on Uncharted: Drake's Fortune.

Burger made his feature debut as writer-director with 2002's Interview with the Assassin, and he followed that film with the much-loved The Illusionist, a period-era dramatic thriller starring Edward Norton. Prior to Limitless, he co-wrote and directed The Lucky Ones, an acclaimed dramedy starring Rachel McAdams, Tim Robbins, and Michael Pena as Iraq War veterans undertaking an odd road trip.

Certain Uncharted video game and Nathan Fillion fans are celebrating. Variety has reported directed David O. Russell has left the video game adaptation film “Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune” over creative differences with Sony.

“Uncharted” is based on the popular Playstation 3 videogames about a treasure hunter named Nathan Drake. Russell was hired last year to write and direct the project. He announced that he planned for Mark Wahlberg to play the main character. And there were rumors actors Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci may join the project. In previous interviews, he said it would not be a straight adaptation of the video game, but about a family of treasure hunters. And he also irked many Nathan Fillion fans who believed the actor should play Drake.

If you're a regular reader of the gaming posts here at Tech Digest, you'll probably be aware that we love the Uncharted PS3 games in a big way. We awarded Uncharted 2: Among Thieves our Game of the Year award in 2009, and are wetting ourselves with anticipation over the release of Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception later this year.

We're also excited about the prospect of an Uncharted movie. Or at least we were until director David O. Russell started getting some "off the chart", so to speak, ideas about what constitues an Uncharted film. Speaking to IGN recently, he's got Uncharted fans once again pulling their hair out, as the movie adaptation, planned for a 2013 release, veers ever further away from the original vision layed down in the Indiana Jones-style games.

According to Joystiq, it seems that Mark Wahlberg being Nathan Drake and the whole “family dynamic” with Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci are just rumors.

“First of all, all that stuff was denied by David O. Russell,” Richmond (Uncharted 3 Game Director) said to Joystiq. “He actually called us up and was like, ‘I don’t know what these guys are talking about.’”

Could Nathan Fillion still have a chance at the part of treasure-hunter Nathan Drake in the video game-turned adventure film ‘Uncharted’ from director David O. Russell?

It’s not an exaggeration to say that fans of the PlayStation 3 video game franchise Uncharted have continued to express their concern for director David O. Russell’s re-imagined take on their beloved treasure hunter, Nathan Drake.

Back in November, Mark Wahlberg confirmed that he would be stepping into Drake’s shoes but, considering the Uncharted film is barely a gleam in Russell’s eye at this point, is it possible that we could see a different actor step into the role? Maybe even fan-favorite Nathan Fillion?

Recently, YouTube user gregblessing27, caught up with Russell after a screening for the director’s critically acclaimed true-life-boxer-story The Fighter - confronting the director about the choice of Mark Wahlberg and championing the benefits of recasting Nathan Fillion (Castle, Firefly) in the part -- ie. “He acts exactly like that dude (Nathan Drake). He has all these little subtleties.”

In a video that makes for fairly uncomfortable viewing, a fan confronts the director with the question of why fan favourite Nathan Fillion wasn't cast as the popular video game character...

When it was announced that Mark Wahlberg would play Nathan Drake in the planned movie of the hit video games, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune and Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, fans were not happy. The fact that he is pretty much nothing like the popular hero as well as the news that O. Russell has a lot of new (read: ignoring the source material) ideas, makes this a very unpopular adaptation with fans. With rumours of the film having circulated for years, those same fans became very attached to the idea of Nathan Fillion playing the character. A damn good choice. Well, here's what the director had to say to that when he was put on the spot by a fairly disgruntled fan. I'm with this guy 100%! Still, it sounds like the director did at least see an audition tape and decided just not to go with him for his take on an adaptation of the series. If this was going to be a movie faithful to the games, it's obvious that Fillion is the best pick for the role, but as mentioned above, it seems that O. Russell has his own ideas.

It's still way too early to make any sort of judgements about this movie, but I'm not a fan of anything I've heard about it so far. We can however be grateful that the third game in the series, Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception, is set to be released on November 1, 2011! Until then, be sure to share your thoughts on this in the usual place!

We reported not so long ago that an Uncharted film was being made based on the massively popular series developed by Naughty Dog. When I first read the news, I was really excited and thought that Uncharted could be the film to break the barrier of the whole, movies about games are crap, conundrum.

Well no longer. It’s been announced that Mark Wahlberg will be playing the part of Nathan Drake with the possibility of Robert De Niro playing his father and Joe Pesci as his uncle…..are you friggin’ kidding me?!

The film will be directed by David O. Russell who has already directed Wahlberg in Three Kings, which wasn’t a bad film, I Heart Huckabees and the soon to be released The Fighter. From all the names mentioned behind the film, it sounds like an April Fool’s Joke. Don’t get me wrong, De Niro and Pesci are accomplished actors but they just don’t seem to fit in the Uncharted mould. It just seems wrong to me.

Marky Mark...I mean Mark Wahlberg will be playing Nathan Drake in the forthcoming "Uncharted" film based on the hit PS3 game franchise.

The actor and star of movies like "The Departed," "Boogie Nights" and "Date Night" confirmed to MTV Multiplayer that he will be starring in a forthcoming movie based on the "Uncharted" games for the PS3.

He will play Drake, the swashbuckling treasure hunter from both "Uncharted: Drake's Fortune" and "Uncharted 2: Among Thieves." Wahlberg also confirmed rumors that Joe Pesci and Robert De Niro may have roles in the film. Meanwhile, David O. Russell the man who helmed films like "Three Kings" and "I Heart Huckabees (and apparently has something of a temper on set) has been tapped as the film's director.
