As 2011 comes to an end, so too will an unknown celebration. Johnny Cullen charts Naughty Dog’s 25-year journey from school-days to super studio.

There’s been a few anniversaries in the gaming world this past year: Ubisoft’s 25th, Blizzard’s 20th. But it seems there may have been one that slipped under the radar, which is a big surprise considering this studio is now perhaps one of the most widely-recognised on the triple-A scene.

Naughty Dog is 25 years old this year. Then again, it’s been a busy year for the studio. Along with the surprise announcement of a new IP, it released a third core entry in the Uncharted series and worked alongside Sony Bend on development of Uncharted: Golden Abyss for the Vita’s launch. But all things have an origin.

[...]It’s been a long 25 years for Naughty Dog, growing from the largely-forgotten Ski Crazed to the potentially massive The Last of Us. The studio seems to have shrugged off the cutesy looks of Crash or Jak and Daxter, instead opting for the serious route with Uncharted and The Last of Us.

However, one thing that has remained the same after a quarter of a century: the quality of Naughty Dog’s games has never let up. With The Last of Us inbound, that trait looks like it will continue. Here’s to another 25 years. [SOURCE (to see the whole article)]

Inspirational games benefit everyone, especially when it comes to game designers seeking to create the best of the best.

Recently, OPM readers voted Uncharted 2: Among Thieves as the greatest PlayStation game ever and while the competition is ridiculously high, we're not about to question the results. But believe it or not, Naughty Dog boss Evan Wells said his own game wouldn't be #1 on his, in fact, that would be ICO. Wells mentioned that the PS2 classic has acted as a big influence on their current project. He also singled out Grand Theft Auto III as an influential title that had a great impact on the industry:

They're pretty different games, but they've both influenced the industry tremendously. [ICO's] the kind of game - that linear, narrative-driven experience - that we're focused on making right now. Everyone in the office has been influenced by it greatly; it's just a fantastic game."

Action-adventure tale next for 'The Fighter' helmer

David O. Russell has closed a deal to write and direct "Uncharted: Drake's Fortune," an adaptation of the 2007 PlayStation 3 video game, for Columbia Pictures. Back in May, Russell first flirted with the project, but then moved on to develop a big-screen adaptation of "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies." But his quest to direct the PS3 game adaptation pulled him back in, leaving "Zombies," for the moment, undead.

Despite making his somewhat combative reputation with left-of-center indie films such as "Spanking the Monkey," "Flirting With Disaster" and "I Heart Huckabees," Russell appears to be making a serious move into bigger-budget mainstream movies. His next film, the boxing drama "The Fighter" from Paramount, comes out December.

In the mold of epic adventure films like "Tomb Raider" and "Indiana Jones," the "Uncharted" game's storyline follows a descendant of Sir Francis Drake, Nathan Drake, as he searches for the treasure of El Dorado on a desert island with a friend and a female journalist.
