Summers are usually a dry time for the gaming industry, as developers and publishers tend to aim for releases during the beginning and end of yearly cycles, but we were in luck this time around. Naughty Dog has been treating PlayStation 3 owners with a beta for its upcoming blockbuster, Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception, and boy has it been great. So much, in fact, that it’s become the most popular beta not only in recent memory, but EVER on a PlayStation platform.

Naughty Dog’s Arne Meyer has posted a list of statistics following the conclusion of the Uncharted 3 multiplayer beta.

Total unique Beta players: 1.53 million people
Total kills: 1.9 billion
Total Cash collected: 1.4 TRILLION dollars (that’s greater than the gross domestic product of Spain, the eleventh highest GDP in the world!)
Total shots fired: 48 billion
Total matches completed: 22 million
Total time played: More than 362 years worth of matches

The beta’s vast library of customizable items, from weapons and attachments to characters and outfits, are great additions to the series, and have made extended play more rewarding. Uncharted 2 had a tendency to reward infrequently, but was still able to keep thousands of fans entertained for months, so it’s no surprise that its successor’s beta has been extremely popular.

Pre-order sales for Sony Corp.’s Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception Collector’s Edition for the Playstation 3 increased this week at Amazon.com Inc. due to strong demand. This week, the Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception Collector’s Edition held a 36 percent sales increase to rank at No. 136 in Amazon’s Video Games division.

Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception will be sold Nov. 11, 2011 in a standard and Collector’s Edition SKU. The Collector’s Edition will include a Nathan Drake statue, replicas of Nathan Drake’s belt buckle and ring with necklace strap, a Steelbook game case, and a Traveling Chest case at $99.99.

Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception is said to include a brand new epic campaign mode in a search for the ‘Atlantis of the Sands’ to include locations like a derelict chateau in France, to the merciless Arabian Dessert. The final game will include competitive and co-op multiplayer online functionality and stereoscopic 3D support. UK retail behemoth ShopTo.net reckons Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception is on track to become the biggest selling game of 2011, with pre-orders having already eclipsed those of Xbox 360 heavy weight, Gears of War 3.

The adventure sequel was announced back in December last year, with a release date pinned down for November 1, 2011 – and if pre-sales are anything to go by, Drake’s latest adventure is already kicking sand in the face of its leading rivals. "The interest in Uncharted 3 is awe-inspiring," commented ShopTo Marketing Manager, Philip Driver.

"We made the game available to pre-order on the site as soon as the release date came through and literally with twenty-four hours it was already in the top ten pre-orders."

ShopTo.Net is predicting that Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception on the PlayStation 3 could be the biggest selling game of 2011.

The folks from the Guinness World Records have recognized three PlayStation milestones. Guinness World Records publishes all sorts of books recognizing some interesting, and often odd accomplishments. But, they also recognize videogames.

At E3, Guinness recognized LittleBigPlanet for the Most User-generated Levels with 2,463,073. It will be interesting to see if LittleBigPlanet 2 can top that record. Uncharted 2: Among Thieves was also recognized for being the best selling PlayStation 3 game, as was MAG for the Most Players in a Console FPS with 256.

Just a week or so ago, a 250GB PS3 ‘Father’s Day Bundle’ was revealed at both Amazon.com and Fry’s electronics. The bundle included both an HDMI cable and a copy of LittleBigPlanet along with a 250GB PS3. Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) has revealed the latest new additions to the PlayStation 3’s official collection of budget titles, the Platinum range. The critically acclaimed Uncharted 2: Among Thieves and the widely respected Ratchet & Clank: A Crack in Time are both set for re-release under the Platinum banner next month.

Having debuted in October last year, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves joins it’s predecessor, Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune in the PlayStation 3’s official range of budget titles. Featuring both a groundbreaking single-player adventure and an enduring multiplayer mode, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves is often referred to as one of the best examples of pioneering game design on the PlayStation 3 console.

Want to own Sony classic for £14? Of course you do...

UK retailers are preparing for the arrival of Uncharted 2: Among Thieves on PS3's Platinum label by slashing the price of pre-orders on the SKU to under £15. ShopTo.net leads the way with a very attractive £13.85 offer - over £6 off its Platinum RRP.

TheHut.com, meanwhile, plumps for a £14.73 price. Amazon doesn't put forward quite so much of a bargain - with its offer coming in at £17.99, whilst HMV offers the Naughty Dog game for the same price.

The online sites of GAME, GameStation and Play.com aren't currently taking pre-orders on the Platinum game. The Platinum PS3 version of Uncharted 2 is due for release on June 11 in the UK, according to Amazon.

If you haven't played it, you really owe it to yourself. CVG's Mike Jackson gave Uncharted 2 a 10/10 review on its release last year.
