Gamers Disappoint, Uncharted 2 Sales Much Too Low

I have a bad feeling in the pit of my stomach. It's the feeling that says, "perhaps gaming is becoming more like movies...in more ways than one."

Quality has long since ceased to translate to popularity in the film world and up until now, I've always been convinced that all the best video games would also sell the best. Down through history, this has proven true 99% of the time. The list of the best-selling games ever is awfully similar to that of the best-reviewed games ever, but if this trend were to remain true in 2009, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves would be the year's top seller.

And it isn't even close. While Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is easily the top seller at about 6 million sold so far, what many consider to be the best game of the generation is laboring at only 1.4 million sold worldwide and about 650,000 sold in North America.

November sales were apparently abysmal because the NPD reported that Naughty Dog's masterpiece sold 537,000 copies in October alone (and that in only a little over two weeks, as the title launched on October 13). Now analysts have said that Modern Warfare 2 is essentially sucking the life out of other great games but I always thought fans of this industry would reward landmark efforts like Uncharted 2.

I suppose I could blame it on MW2 and after all, sales of Uncharted 2 vastly outstrip that of the original title back in 2007. But even so, we're talking about what I - and many others - consider to be the best of the best. What are gamers thinking? So disappointed in the whole group right now. :(
