Director David O. Russell Abandons ‘Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune’ Film

Certain Uncharted video game and Nathan Fillion fans are celebrating. Variety has reported directed David O. Russell has left the video game adaptation film “Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune” over creative differences with Sony.
“Uncharted” is based on the popular Playstation 3 videogames about a treasure hunter named Nathan Drake. Russell was hired last year to write and direct the project. He announced that he planned for Mark Wahlberg to play the main character. And there were rumors actors Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci may join the project. In previous interviews, he said it would not be a straight adaptation of the video game, but about a family of treasure hunters. And he also irked many Nathan Fillion fans who believed the actor should play Drake.
Insiders told Variety that the split was “amicable and due to creative differences on the project, which Sony will continue to aggressively develop.” Without Russell, Sony may be back to square one by seeking out a new director. Scriptwriters Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer wrote the first draft of the script, in which Sony is “still very high on.”
“Uncharted” video games are developed by Santa Monica-based Naughty Dog and published by Sony Computer Entertainment. The original title was released in 2007 and a follow up video game sequel “Uncharted 2: Among Thieves” was released in 2009. Sony plans to release “Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception” later this year. The film will be produced by Avi Arad (“Spider-Man,” “Iron Man”), Ari Arad “Ghost Rider,” “The Punisher”), Charles Roven (“The Dark Knight,” “Twelve Monkeys”) and Alex Gartner (“Get Smart,” “The Bank Job”).
