Naughty Dog talks Drake’s Design, Knew it would stand out from 'next-gen filter'

Since Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune launched on the PS3 in late 2007, Nathan Drake could be viewed as the new mascot of the PlayStation 3. With Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception set to release on November 1st this year, everyone is eagerly anticipating its release. Before the title launches, though, Naughty Dog has shares some new information on how Drake came to be the Drake we have come to know and love.

Naughty Dog’s Evan Wells shares how the character design came to be and how the look of Drake would standout from other releases of the generation. By creating a more realistic and believable character, Uncharted was one of the first AAA games not plagued with the brown and grays of the “next-gen filter”.

“We were bouncing around with a bunch of different character protagonist ideas, sort of the whole spectrum", says Wells. "The Xbox 360 was launching, and we saw that everybody was doing these browns and grays, and post-apocalyptic and heavy and bald space marines. So, as soon as we hit on that idea of what became Nathan Drake, we thought, ‘this is really going to stand out.’”

How Naughty Dog Bypasses Uncharted Memory Issue

Naughty Dog has often said that only the PlayStation 3 is capable of producing their virtual visions, but did you know that Uncharted 2 almost didn't "fit" on Sony's machine? We're talking about a super ambitious team that wants to get the most out of themselves and as a direct result, the most out of the equipment they utilize. They're shooting for the stars again with Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception, and as Naughty Dog boss Christophe Balestra told Edge, they actually "have to be uncomfortable."

"If anyone on the team makes a face like, 'Oh, we're f*cked', then we know we're good. We have to be uncomfortable. Three weeks before shipping Uncharted 2, we couldn't even fit the game in memory. The day we have no solution to that, that's going to be a real problem."

Uncharted Three among the top 15 most wished for games

Sony Corp.’s Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception for the Playstation 3 this week ranked in the top 15 ‘Most Wished For’ games at Amazon.com Inc. amid strong pre-release demand for the action sequel. This week, Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception ranked as the No. 13 Most Wished For game at Amazon’s Video Games division.

Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception will be sold Nov. 11, 2011. Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception is said to include a brand new epic campaign mode in a search for the ‘Atlantis of the Sands’ to include locations like a derelict chateau in France, to the merciless Arabian Dessert. The final game will include competitive and co-op multiplayer online functionality and stereoscopic 3D support. [SOURCE]

Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception: No co-op in campaign

Today, Sony and Naughty Dog allowed media outlets to release all-new game footage, interviews, and additional details on their upcoming PS3 exclusive, Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception. When Naughty Dog debuted the first game footage several weeks ago, many thought the gameplay of the chateau level possibly indicated co-op to be in the game's campaign mode. Naughty Dog has addressed that question and given an answer that may make some happy or disappoint others.

"We are not going to do co-op in the single-player. There will not be a cooperative experience in the single player game," stated Naughty Dog's Justin Richmond in an interview with GameSpot. The reason he gave was that with the series so story driven, they wanted to tell it in a single-player fashion to keep that story element a vital point for the game and this was the best way to go about that.

No other details were shared about the game's multiplayer modes, so if you have hope for some kind of co-op mode, there is still the chance Naughty Dog offers a more fleshed out co-op online-only mode like they did in Uncharted 2: Among Thieves.

Pre-Sim’ed and Realtime Physics in Uncharted 2

Over at Develop, they have an exclusive excerpt from Ballistic Publishing’s ‘Art of Uncharted 2′, where they get very in-depth on the creation of some of the iconic scenes from Uncharted 2: Among Thieves. I really loved the opening where they discuss the marriage of presimulated physics run in Maya to real-time physics done via their in-game Havok engine.

We also wanted to increase our use of pre-simulated physics so if we had a major destruction effect like a building collapsing, we’d pre-simulate all that in Maya, bake all that animation down, and then run that through the game engine. So you’d have real-time control of the player, but the building collapsing is a pre-simulated event.

A Deeper Look Into The Combat Design Of Uncharted 2

Hello, my name is Benson Russell, and I'm an addi-- wait... wrong meeting! I'm a designer here at Naughty Dog in beautiful Santa Monica, and I was the primary combat designer for Uncharted 2: Among Thieves. I helped to implement the majority of the combat encounters across the game, as well as work with other designers and our programmers in developing our AI and weapons systems.

That being so, I wanted to write an article regarding how we approached combat encounter design for Uncharted 2. It turns out there was a lot of information to share, so I was given the opportunity to create a short series of articles on the subject. This is the first in that series, and I hope you find the information... informative.

Where We Came From:
After completing Uncharted: Drake's Fortune (U1), we wanted to take a step back, look at what we accomplished, and then decide how we wanted to evolve it for our next game.

PlayStation 3 Sees Record Holiday Sales

A mid-year price cut and a strong lineup of software titles gave Sony's PlayStation 3 a record holiday season, the company said Wednesday. Sales of the console in the last five weeks of the year totaled 3.8 million units worldwide, a 76 percent jump on 2008.

"Last holiday season was the most successful holiday season in the history of PlayStation 3," said Kaz Hirai, CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment, during a news conference at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Sales were helped by a mid-August price cut from around US$400 to $300 and the launch in September of a more compact version of the console but the recent launch of several hot software titles likely did more to drive holiday sales.

"We've seen many, many great titles launched in every part of the world for PlayStation 3 such as Assassin's Creed 2, Call of Duty, Modern Warfare 2, and of course Uncharted 2 Among Thieves in North America and Europe and Final Fantasy XIII in Japan," Hirai said. Sony is expecting to sell 13 million PlayStation 3 consoles in the financial year from April 2009 to March 2010. In the prior year sales totaled 10.1 million units.

Naughty Dog Not "Itching" For New Hardware

We all know that Uncharted 2: Among Thieves was a rip-roaring success in the eyes of gamers and critics alike, but how do the developers feel about the experience? Well, not surprisingly, they're satisfied with the effort.

In a lengthy G4 interview with Naughty Dog co-founder Evan Wells, we get the inside scoop on how the studio feels about every aspect of the multiplayer, how the ideas for the sequel first came about, the decision to opt for a linear adventure, the difficulty in creating puzzles and the ending, and much more. Feel free to read it all - it's well worth your time - but we'd like to point you to the question of new hardware. G4 asked Wells if he was more comfortable with the PS3 and if he was "itching" to try some new hardware, to which Wells replied:

Uncharted 2 Doesn't Play Well with SDTVs?

It's no small secret that with high definition being the big thing with televisions right now, developers sometimes forget about the people who might own an Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3, but don't have the optimal viewing situation available for it. Games such as Burnout Paradise, Dead Rising, and Banjo Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts have presented problems to the crowd who hasn't upgraded for whatever reason (and in this economy, there are plenty), and it seems that Sony's biggest title of 2009, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, may have the same issue.

According to Negative Gamer, where there were no such problems with the original Uncharted, the sequel makes it difficult to spot key points for grabbing ledges, which way enemies are facing during stealth segments, invisible red wires to be traced, and difficult-to-find targeting reticules.

For the record, they clarify in the comments, "the game looks stunning with its epic vistas and such. I just found it near impossible to see the small details, which is what the rant is about. The lack of detail caused the gameplay to suffer for me."

Gamers Disappoint, Uncharted 2 Sales Much Too Low

I have a bad feeling in the pit of my stomach. It's the feeling that says, "perhaps gaming is becoming more like movies...in more ways than one."

Quality has long since ceased to translate to popularity in the film world and up until now, I've always been convinced that all the best video games would also sell the best. Down through history, this has proven true 99% of the time. The list of the best-selling games ever is awfully similar to that of the best-reviewed games ever, but if this trend were to remain true in 2009, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves would be the year's top seller.
