Pop culture critic Anita Sarkeesian had an idea. She wanted to produce a web series probing stereotypes that objectified women in video games. Anita appealed for donations toward her project through the popular crowd funding website Kickstarter. That’s when the harassment began. “I got threats of death, threats of violence, threats of rape. It was really intense. And there was so much of it.”

Veteran Naughty Dog lead Richard Lemarchand is moving on after some eight years with the studio, "excited and happy" to join the School of Cinematic Arts at the University of Southern California.

Specifically, Lemarchand -- most recently co-lead designer on Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception -- will be teaching at the school's Interactive Media Division, which trained Thatgamecompany's Kellee Santiago and Jenova Chen, among others. He'll also work on a series of experimental games, as part of a research project.

"In other words, I'll be surrounded by awesome people, talking craft and philosophy, and building strange new things!" he told Gamasutra. Lemarchand has been closely associated with the program for some years, having numerous friends involved, and praising the legacy of acclaim its games program has earned. As a frequent speaker and lecturer (and active Twitterer) himself, he has developed close ties to academic and design practice communities from California to New York and everywhere in between.

Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception is set to receive the new Co-op Shade Survival Mode next week, introducing a new multiplayer game type that lets you play with your friends as you take on some of the the game's hardest enemies. The new Shade Survival mode is a wave-based gameplay type, of which there are 8 rounds, that throws progressively harder Djinn at you."The Djinn’s ability to catch fire and teleport poses a formidable challenge to team strategy and coordination, and later rounds include highly skilled Djinn sporting extra armor and firepower, so get ready for a hearty battle," Naughty Dog community strategist Eric Monacelli said.

"Players will earn a very sizable amount of cash by playing this mode through to completion and therefore can level up more quickly when surviving the onslaught," he added. Expect to earn new medals while playing, as well. [SOURCE]

Naughty Dog's Justin Richmond looks back at Drake's Deception.

Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception is a verified masterpiece. At Naughty Dog, Justin Richmond, the game's director, works with creative director Amy Hennig to focus on game design and actual game play for the Uncharted games. In this exclusive interview, Richmond takes a look back at Nathan Drake's latest adventure.

What were your goals heading into Uncharted 3?
We wanted to keep pushing the envelope in terms of storytelling and gameplay. We were intent on telling a more personal story about Drake, especially in regards to his past. We were trying to follow up the amazing success of Uncharted 2, and push the technological bar in terms of our graphics and set pieces to new levels. We also wanted to blow out our multiplayer presence, and do an even better job with our online offering.

We preview the Japanese retail version of Uncharted: Golden Abyss, one of the most anticipated PlayStation Vita launch titles arriving on February 22. By the end of next month, PlayStation fans in North America will be able to carry Uncharted around in their pockets. Those pockets will need to be rather large and awkward, since the PlayStation Vita is a bit larger than your average smartphone, but don’t be a jerk about it. You know what I’m saying. The Vita is turning Uncharted into a portable adventure with Uncharted: Golden Abyss.

I picked up my imported Vita earlier this week and have been tooling around with the Japanese version of Golden Abyss which, it should be noted, comes fully equipped with English-language dialogue. There’s some Japanese text on the game case (which looks like an adorably micro-sized Blu-ray case), but it’s safe to say that the Japan version of Golden Abyss is identical to what you’ll all be playing come February 22. So with that in mind, how do things shape up? [READ MORE]

I really hope that's fanmade :(

As development for PlayStation 4 gears up, Naughty Dog has expressed its concerns about the transition to Sony's next system. In a new interview, studio co-president Evan Wells explains that moving to new hardware is a "double-edged sword."

"The geek inside you is always excited about a shiny new toy, but then the practicality of it starts to set in: this is going to be a lot of hard work," Wells told Eurogamer. "When you're going to new technology, every day is a slog, progress is slow and it really takes a different kind of attitude and mentality to get through that kind of push and it's not right for everybody."

Nathan Drake and co. have helped Naughty Dog’s Uncharted series to sell in excess of 13 million copies, according to the title’s Marketing Manager, Sony’s Asad Quizilbash. The news comes form an interview with IndustryGamers (as reported by VG247), where Quizilbash spoke about the marketing strategy for Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception, which sold 3.8 million in its first week on sale, doubling its predecessor, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves. “As we reported, day one we shipped over 3.8 Million copies of Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception. Week one sales were double that of Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, far exceeding our expectations,” He told IG.

When questioned further on the sales of the series as a whole, Quizilbash came straight out gave the magic number. “[We've] sold over 13 Million units globally.” Pretty impressive, considering Uncharted is a platform exclusive. Despite the success of the series, the marketing manager was reluctant to give any information away about another Uncharted title in the future. “We can’t talk about any future title releases. We will continue to make games that our consumers love experiencing.” he stated. Take from that what you will.

When you have a franchise like Uncharted, everyone and everything involved tends to benefit, including the hardware that plays the game. This is a very important series, and the latest entry, Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception, might be critical to further PlayStation 3 sales success.

According to what Sony and various analysts told IndustryGamers, the game's importance really can't be understated. M2 Research analyst Billy Pidgeon said Uncharted 3 is "tremendously important to Sony," and has a good chance at keeping "millions of PS3s active."

"As an exclusive, Uncharted 3 has system selling potential and will keep millions of PS3s active. The franchise has improved consistently with each iteration, and the game is one of the most positive examples of blending cinematic and game development disciplines. Uncharted 3, like its predecessors, has the potential to reach a wider audience due to the integration of classic action film plot elements with strong characters."

To hear some developers talk, motion-capture is the only way to get realistic faces in videogames. Just one problem: It’s horrifying. “When people talk, their lips don’t move very much,” says Josh Scherr, lead cinematics animator on Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception. “Translated into computer animation, it ends up looking dead.” Instead, Scherr’s team at developer Naughty Dog animates characters’ faces by hand, making U3 the most lifelike game on the shelves. Here’s how they give hero Nathan Drake a face to (hopefully not) die for.

Emotion “Getting a believable smile on a computer-animated face is really difficult: When you smile, it makes your cheeks puff up around your eyes. Morphing the features takes too much processing power, so we use a facial system with about 90 controls—one opens the mouth, one raises the upper lip, one makes an eye blink. We sculpt performances out of that.”

Just Push Start had a chance to interview the Lead Effects Artist for Uncharted 3, Keith Guerette about Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception. Included in our interview is his reason for why Uncharted 3 has no PlayStation Move support and reasons why he thinks Uncharted 3 is a better game than Uncharted 2. He also mentions Naughty Dog doesn’t intend to “simply regurgitate a recipe to pump out a new game”.

JPS: Uncharted 2 was named 2009 Game of the Year by many people including us here at Just Push Start. What has Naughty Dog done to make sure Uncharted 3 is just as innovative as its critically acclaimed predecessor?
KG
– It’s been such a crazy experience for us (and thank you so much for your support!!) – when we finished Uncharted 2, we knew that we had a pretty good game to be proud of, but we wouldn’t have predicted how much people enjoyed it. From the moment we started production on Uncharted 3, we were very aware of the high expectations and the pressure, so we had to look hard at our successes and failures within Uncharted 2, and decide where to go from there.
