Uncharted 4 Release Date Reveal Rumored Following Naughty Dog Job Listing, Retailer Leak

Could Naughty Dog already be hard at work on Uncharted 4? Find out why some think the studio is already working on the latest adventures of Nathan Drake, and when one retailer expects the Uncharted 4 release date to arrive.

It hasn't even been two years since Nathan Drake last graced a PlayStation console, in Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception, but new rumors have more than a few Uncharted fans wondering just how long they'll be forced to wait for the Uncharted 4 release date.

Though the franchise remained conspicuously absent from the PlayStation 4 unveiling, despite an appearance by fellow Naughty Dog project , many fans are beginning to wonder if the Uncharted 4 release date could be revealed next week during E3 2013. Outside of the general hope that Nathan Drake's ultra-cinematic adventures will find a home on Sony's next PlayStation, several recent updates to the Naughty Dog Jobs page have fans wondering if Uncharted 4 might already be in-development at the Santa Monica studio.

The Vita Is A Great System—Too Bad Sony Screwed It Up

Have you checked out that Vita game? You know—the one that's a shoddy spinoff of a big-name series?

Perhaps Call of Duty: Declassified, which currently has a whopping 32% on Metacritic? Or Uncharted: Golden Abyss, a game that our Kirk Hamilton called "a cut-rate version of the Uncharted games that most people have already played"? How about Resistance: Burning Skies, which Kotaku boss Stephen Totilo called "a mediocre new first-person shooter that has no excuses for underachieving"?

TRIGGER WARNING: 16x9 : Dangerous Game: Tropes vs Women bullying

Pop culture critic Anita Sarkeesian had an idea. She wanted to produce a web series probing stereotypes that objectified women in video games. Anita appealed for donations toward her project through the popular crowd funding website Kickstarter. That’s when the harassment began. “I got threats of death, threats of violence, threats of rape. It was really intense. And there was so much of it.”

The Next Uncharted Game is Not Really an Uncharted Game

I told you not to get too excited. The next Uncharted game will be a "casino/card game", according to its Brazilian ratings clasification.

Called Uncharted: Fight for Fortune, it's for the PlayStation Vita, and given it's lack of marketing to the point where it's being revealed by ratings boards, you can bet it'll be a fairly simple and cheap affair.

Pop Matters: The Implicit Promise and the Uncharted Series

Setting our expectations about what a story is going to be is important to storytelling. The Uncharted series sometimes fails to meet the expectations that it establishes for its players.

An implicit promise of storytelling is the concept that the beginning of the story sets up the expectations of the audience with regards to tone, basic concept, and generally the broad strokes of the areas that that story will and will not cover. It’s not so much a rule rather than just how things work. It’s why a creator spends so much time with the beginning of a work over the middle. First impressions matter because it tells so much of what is yet to come. It tells us what to expect and puts us in the right frame of mind for what is to come. Works that betray such a promise feel shoddy, unfocused, or an overall mess. Sometimes without anything being technically wrong with anything that comes afterwards.

Naughty Dog's designers have concocted a number of slightly unusual game modes for online play. The first Lab mode, which will go live with the patch, will be a T-bolt and Pistole only match. Over time Naughty Dog will rotate in other game types.

Uncharted designer’s departure from Naughty Dog raises questions about series’ future

One of the chief architects behind the Uncharted series leaves Naughty Dog to take up teaching, but his altruistic ambitions cast doubt on the future of Sony's popular series. After eight years with long time Sony partner Naughty Dog, Richard Lemarchand is leaving the studio to work with the School of Cinematic Arts at the University of Southern California. His last game with the company was 2011’s divisive Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception, which he worked on as co-lead designer.

Gamasutra reported on Lemarchand’s departure in a Monday report, discussing his new job with USC. The program Lemarchand will be teaching in is the exact same one that graduated Jenova Chen and Kellee Santiago before those two went on to form Thatgamecompany, creating Flower and Journey. “I’ll be surrounded by awesome people, talking craft and philosophy, and building strange new things!” said Lemarchand.

Uncharted designer Lemarchand leaves Naughty Dog for USC

Veteran Naughty Dog lead Richard Lemarchand is moving on after some eight years with the studio, "excited and happy" to join the School of Cinematic Arts at the University of Southern California.

Specifically, Lemarchand -- most recently co-lead designer on Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception -- will be teaching at the school's Interactive Media Division, which trained Thatgamecompany's Kellee Santiago and Jenova Chen, among others. He'll also work on a series of experimental games, as part of a research project.

"In other words, I'll be surrounded by awesome people, talking craft and philosophy, and building strange new things!" he told Gamasutra. Lemarchand has been closely associated with the program for some years, having numerous friends involved, and praising the legacy of acclaim its games program has earned. As a frequent speaker and lecturer (and active Twitterer) himself, he has developed close ties to academic and design practice communities from California to New York and everywhere in between.

February NPD: Strong Vita Launch Can't Halt Sales Slide

It'll take more than a new portable to bring sales back up. The NPD Group has revealed the industry numbers for February, and sales were down across the board. Overall US retail sales for the month came in at $1.06 billion, which is down 20% year-over-year. Software fell even further, down 24% to $485.7 million, and even hardware - despite the availability of two new systems in the Nintendo 3DS and PlayStation Vita - were down 18% to $381.4 million. The only silver lining is that hardware was up in comparison to the previous month. As for the Vita, Uncharted: Golden Abyss did manage to crack the top 20 on the software charts, and $10 million worth of Vita accessories were sold, too.
