Uncharted 3's multiplayer: Does the audience have too much say?

Uncharted 3's multiplayer beta is coming soon. Will player feedback hurt or help the game?

About midway through the campaign of the 2009 game Uncharted 2: Among Thieves (UC2), the player is tasked with traversing an enemy-filled moving train as it passes through the forests of Nepal into the mountains of Tibet. If you play it, there will be moments where you’ll have to decide between shooting your attackers, diving to hang off the side of the train car you're on to avoid overpassing signs, or doing a combination of both at the same time. Soon after the beginning of the train sequence, you’ll have to make that decision under missile fire from an attacking helicopter as it indiscriminately blows the train apart.

The people at Naughty Dog (ND), developer of the Uncharted series, have voiced their desire [video] to carry over such cinematic set-pieces to the multiplayer portions its games in the Uncharted series (which is just set for UC2 for the time being; Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception [UC3] is due out in November). With the reveal of UC3’s multiplayer and its upcoming beta, it seems the company has followed through (i.e., the airstrip level in UC3’s multiplayer where players fight atop moving trucks behind an airplane, all hurtling down a runway). It’s all about how the parts add up to create an experience.

Naughty Dog talks Drake’s Design, Knew it would stand out from 'next-gen filter'

Since Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune launched on the PS3 in late 2007, Nathan Drake could be viewed as the new mascot of the PlayStation 3. With Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception set to release on November 1st this year, everyone is eagerly anticipating its release. Before the title launches, though, Naughty Dog has shares some new information on how Drake came to be the Drake we have come to know and love.

Naughty Dog’s Evan Wells shares how the character design came to be and how the look of Drake would standout from other releases of the generation. By creating a more realistic and believable character, Uncharted was one of the first AAA games not plagued with the brown and grays of the “next-gen filter”.

“We were bouncing around with a bunch of different character protagonist ideas, sort of the whole spectrum", says Wells. "The Xbox 360 was launching, and we saw that everybody was doing these browns and grays, and post-apocalyptic and heavy and bald space marines. So, as soon as we hit on that idea of what became Nathan Drake, we thought, ‘this is really going to stand out.’”

How Naughty Dog Bypasses Uncharted Memory Issue

Naughty Dog has often said that only the PlayStation 3 is capable of producing their virtual visions, but did you know that Uncharted 2 almost didn't "fit" on Sony's machine? We're talking about a super ambitious team that wants to get the most out of themselves and as a direct result, the most out of the equipment they utilize. They're shooting for the stars again with Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception, and as Naughty Dog boss Christophe Balestra told Edge, they actually "have to be uncomfortable."

"If anyone on the team makes a face like, 'Oh, we're f*cked', then we know we're good. We have to be uncomfortable. Three weeks before shipping Uncharted 2, we couldn't even fit the game in memory. The day we have no solution to that, that's going to be a real problem."

Uncharted Three among the top 15 most wished for games

Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception: No co-op in campaign

Today, Sony and Naughty Dog allowed media outlets to release all-new game footage, interviews, and additional details on their upcoming PS3 exclusive, Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception. When Naughty Dog debuted the first game footage several weeks ago, many thought the gameplay of the chateau level possibly indicated co-op to be in the game's campaign mode. Naughty Dog has addressed that question and given an answer that may make some happy or disappoint others.

"We are not going to do co-op in the single-player. There will not be a cooperative experience in the single player game," stated Naughty Dog's Justin Richmond in an interview with GameSpot. The reason he gave was that with the series so story driven, they wanted to tell it in a single-player fashion to keep that story element a vital point for the game and this was the best way to go about that.

No other details were shared about the game's multiplayer modes, so if you have hope for some kind of co-op mode, there is still the chance Naughty Dog offers a more fleshed out co-op online-only mode like they did in Uncharted 2: Among Thieves.

Pre-Sim’ed and Realtime Physics in Uncharted 2

Over at Develop, they have an exclusive excerpt from Ballistic Publishing’s ‘Art of Uncharted 2′, where they get very in-depth on the creation of some of the iconic scenes from Uncharted 2: Among Thieves. I really loved the opening where they discuss the marriage of presimulated physics run in Maya to real-time physics done via their in-game Havok engine.

We also wanted to increase our use of pre-simulated physics so if we had a major destruction effect like a building collapsing, we’d pre-simulate all that in Maya, bake all that animation down, and then run that through the game engine. So you’d have real-time control of the player, but the building collapsing is a pre-simulated event.

A Deeper Look Into The Combat Design Of Uncharted 2

Hello, my name is Benson Russell, and I'm an addi-- wait... wrong meeting! I'm a designer here at Naughty Dog in beautiful Santa Monica, and I was the primary combat designer for Uncharted 2: Among Thieves. I helped to implement the majority of the combat encounters across the game, as well as work with other designers and our programmers in developing our AI and weapons systems.

That being so, I wanted to write an article regarding how we approached combat encounter design for Uncharted 2. It turns out there was a lot of information to share, so I was given the opportunity to create a short series of articles on the subject. This is the first in that series, and I hope you find the information... informative.

Where We Came From:
After completing Uncharted: Drake's Fortune (U1), we wanted to take a step back, look at what we accomplished, and then decide how we wanted to evolve it for our next game.
