Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception Preview (PS3)
Since modern-day treasure hunter Nathan Drake debuted on the PlayStation 3 back in 2007, many of us have grown rather fond of this everyman hero with the now famous half-tuck shirt and witty banter. In addition to being the lead role in the very polished, adventure-filled Uncharted series, he represented a new beginning for adventure games, a bar that developer Naughty Dog set very high in terms of storyline, graphics and cinematics, one that some may argue injected new life and inspiration into the videogame industry. Uncharted 3 turns up the heat with procedural fire effects
Naughty Dog’s Arne Meyer has described how the esteemed developer is upping the visual ante for Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception, specifically with its inclusion of some swanky procedural fire effects. This technically tricky feature allows fire to realistically eat away at the surrounding architecture, with Meyer stating that players could conceivably take a load off during gameplay and watch a structure (in this case the burning Chateau) slowly burn to a crisp. “Essentially, we’re programming oxygen and then having the fire follow it around the environment,” explained Meyer, in a post on the EU PS Blog. If you're a regular reader of the gaming posts here at Tech Digest, you'll probably be aware that we love the Uncharted PS3 games in a big way. We awarded Uncharted 2: Among Thieves our Game of the Year award in 2009, and are wetting ourselves with anticipation over the release of Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception later this year.

We're also excited about the prospect of an Uncharted movie. Or at least we were until director David O. Russell started getting some "off the chart", so to speak, ideas about what constitues an Uncharted film. Speaking to IGN recently, he's got Uncharted fans once again pulling their hair out, as the movie adaptation, planned for a 2013 release, veers ever further away from the original vision layed down in the Indiana Jones-style games.

Studio details motion capture and voice acting procedure

Naughty Dog has likened the motion capture and voice acting procedure of Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception to that of a Hollywood film. The dev is currently hard at work on the third game in its trilogy, ahead of its release in November. The Uncharted series has long been praised for its movie-like sections - something ND says it is keen to take to the next level in its new game.

"We have two motion capture spaces - a smaller one in the studio that lets us pick up smaller pieces, like idols, and then we have a dedicated stage at Sony Studios, and that's where we get both the motion capture and the audio - because we do all of the dialogue at the same time - for both gameplay and cinematics," Naughty Dog community strategist Arne Meyer told the PS Blog.
