drakesfortune | Uncharted Movie Casts Mark Wahlberg As Nathan Drake

We reported not so long ago that an Uncharted film was being made based on the massively popular series developed by Naughty Dog. When I first read the news, I was really excited and thought that Uncharted could be the film to break the barrier of the whole, movies about games are crap, conundrum.

Well no longer. It’s been announced that Mark Wahlberg will be playing the part of Nathan Drake with the possibility of Robert De Niro playing his father and Joe Pesci as his uncle…..are you friggin’ kidding me?!

The film will be directed by David O. Russell who has already directed Wahlberg in Three Kings, which wasn’t a bad film, I Heart Huckabees and the soon to be released The Fighter. From all the names mentioned behind the film, it sounds like an April Fool’s Joke. Don’t get me wrong, De Niro and Pesci are accomplished actors but they just don’t seem to fit in the Uncharted mould. It just seems wrong to me.

Everyone thought that Nathan Fillion of Firefly fame would have been the number one candidate for the role as he has that natural humour that is seen from Drake in Uncharted: Drakes Fortune and the sequel Uncharted 2: Among Thieves. Not to mention he makes a decent action hero so why didn’t they cast him?

Instead, they’ve gone for the wooden Wahlberg who makes more hit or miss films then anybody in my opinion. His last venture into the video game films was as Max Payne, which was average at best and that’s being nice. I suppose Three Kings wasn’t a bad film, but I want to see an amazing Uncharted film, not an average one. Even Nolan North who is the voice of Drake and motion-capture actor in the games would have been a better choice than Walhberg.

As you can tell, I’m not happy about this and am now cringing at the thought of an Uncharted movie. Will I go to the cinema to see it? Maybe. It would be better to see it in the cinema rather than on Blu-Ray at home, but do I want to give my money to something that has been tainted right from the off?

Are you as annoyed and disappointed as me that once again Hollywood messed up what could have been a gold mine of a film franchise? I’m that frustrated I may even start a Facebook group called “Sack Wahlberg! We want Fillion for Drake!”.
