Uncharted 2: Among Thieves was a sensational game this generation. I think no one game has come closer to the level of action and storytelling that Among Thieves achieved. If you have a good memory, Uncharted 2 was first revealed at the VGA awards of 2008. You can check out the trailer in high definition below:
So by logic, there is no better place for Naughty Dog to pull the wraps off from one of the most anticipated sequels to one of the most outstanding games this generation. Uncharted 2 was close to perfect, name the elements that go in to making a game and Among Thieves excelled in all. So when I started thinking about this article, I knew this is going to be a tough one because finding ten points that Uncharted 3 can use and better Uncharted 2 is going to be taxing. But I eventually found out some that will make sense. So let’s get started! Note to our Readers: Please add you wishes in the comments below, you never know who is reading this piece.
Fix the Cover System:
Most of the time in Uncharted 2, you will be behind cover. Now this is one aspect I think Naughty Dog needs to get a fix on. The cover system was a bit of hit and miss in Among Thieves with some players facing issues. Sometimes Drake will just not respond to get out of cover or just not cling to them. It was easy to overlook these issues in Among Thieves but in Uncharted 3 we want this to get fixed for good!
Around the Globe:
Uncharted 2 saw Drake go to various locations in search for the Cintamani Stone. From Borneo to Nepal to the exotic locations in the mythical city of Shambala, Naughty Dog gave the player a world never witnessed before. But why can’t Drake go on a globetrotting adventure? Recent rumours have suggested that Uncharted 3 may take place in India or in some desert region (Egypt) or some underwater world in Atlantis. Even a setting for the secret behind Bermuda Triangle may be a good catch! The problem is I want Drake to venture each and every location that I mentioned not just one or two them!
Add More in to the Stealth Element:
New to Uncharted, was the stealth element and the developers did a great job of implementing it. I saw many critics slamming it, saying that first mission on stealth was too hard; to be honest it was very well done. But as you know there is always room for improvement. Why not take a leaf from games like Splinter Cell? Adding stealth weapons like an MK 22 which when shot will make your enemies go unconscious for a while. This will add a whole new variety of stealth in the franchise.
We want difficult and longer Puzzles:
The thing with both the games in franchise is that even though there a lot of puzzles, none of them were hard and in some cases too easy that even a 5 year old kid can solve it. The biggest reason for that is Nathan’s handbook gives away everything about how to go about the puzzle. For example when you are in Nepal and you enter that monastery with a huge statue, Drake just has to refer the puzzle and do a few “monkey” jump and the thing is over in 5 minutes. In Uncharted 3 we want longer and difficult puzzles, we want to pull our hair off and we want to get stressed!
Full Co-Op Campaign:
If you have ever played Uncharted 2 (and the answer is no, you should stop reading now and go back and buy one), than you must have observed that at majority of the times you were accompanied by someone. In the Turkish Prison you were accompanied by Flynn, In Nepal you were accompanied by Chloe, Jeff and Elena and in Borneo by the good old Sullivan. This begs the question, why can’t we have a full blown co-op campaign?! And this is what I want to see badly in Uncharted 3.
Use of 3D and PlayStation Move:
It’s only obvious that Uncharted 3 will be in 3D and will make use of the Move somehow, since those two areas will be a priority for Sony for a long time now. Now close your eyes and just imagine how the world of Uncharted 3 will look like in 3D! Damn…it looks awesome already. I am pretty much sure that Naughty Dog will be pushing the visual boundaries even more this time around as they did with Among Thieves. I am just not sure how they will use Move, may be they will use it for the combat mechanics, shooting and throwing grenades. I guess we have to just wait and watch on this one.
Battle Strategy:
The combat was pretty solid in the previous game, but it lacked one thing. It was always uni-directional. The bad guys will charge Drake, Drake will charge them and DANG! Drake wins. So it was always Drake approaching them and killing the hell out of them. Why not give the player the option to strategize in some situations? Let’s say Drake has to face to 30 enemies at once and there is no way he can take them down head on. Why not use Drake’s acrobatic abilities, climb up to a certain height, get over or behind them, drop a grenade…KABOOM! Sounds any good?
Split Screen Game play:
Even though it was fun taking shots in the online modes, the one thing that was missing was Split Screen mode. There are still hell lot of gamers who don’t go online a lot but still like to play with their buddies. Trust me it’s an entirely different experience while playing with a “real” buddy besides you!
Online: Something like Demons Soul?
Uncharted 2’s online modes were absolutely fantastic, had a ton of fun! But what I am suggesting here is to implement something similar to Demons Soul. If anyone of you had the guts and the heart to play Demon’s Soul, you must be aware of its unique online element. The ability to give traces, help messages etc on the way for other people who are logged in. Now this may not work in the normal online modes, but this can surely work for short episodic content which may or may not have any relation with the main story. This short level could be a daunting puzzle or a trap through a pyramid or whatever. But I really like the idea and I hope to see something similar in Uncharted 3.
The Story: De Ja Vu Shadow of the Colossus?
Naughty Dog has revealed that they are huge fans of Shadow of the Colossus. When Uncharted 2 was rated as the Best Ever PlayStation game, they reverted back saying that Shadow of the Colossus deserved that spot. Now why the love? Is Naughty Dog going to tell a tale on the myths and truth behind those epic Colossi or some bad guy willing to destroy the world by raising them from the ashes? If that is the way that Naughty Dog is taking, I am going to stand first in the line when the game releases! Got more to add? Loved or hated the article? Let us know in the comments below.
