Naughty Dog has revealed their ‘Uncharted 3′ villain – an older, but ruthless, woman that leads a shadowy clandestine organization.

Three months ago, Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception was confirmed at the 2010 VGAs. Naughty Dog has been relatively forthcoming with information, providing us with trailers, insights into the game’s desert setting-design, as well as where the story might take fan-favorite leading man Nathan Drake. Now, thanks to a set of low-quality images, we have our first look at Drake’s antagonist in Uncharted 3.

Uncharted villains tend to be one of the less-successful aspects of the series. For all of Drake’s charm and witty banter, his opponents have mostly fallen into traditional greedy villain (for money and/or power) tropes – not to mention two very “gamey” final boss fights. Gabriel Roman and Atoq Navarro were a predictable greedy billionaire/back-stabbing henchman pairing in Uncharted and, despite a number of twists and turns along the way, Uncharted 2‘s Zoran Lazarevic was the kind of lug-head mercenary we’ve seen time and time again in video games.

The original Uncharted was a genuine hit out of leftfield, a rollicking old school adventure that took the Indiana Jones template and blasted it into the new millennium. Uncharted 2 took the genius of that idea and proceeded to rewrite the rulebook when it came to production values and rollercoaster action - becoming arguably the finest videogame adventure of all.

Just when we're thinking there's nowhere left to go (or, rather, climb or shoot), along comes Drake's Deception... Deception, if you'll excuse the disambiguation in chronology, might be Nate's Temple of Doom. See, this is the Uncharted where our oh-so-slick hero encounters 'occult treachery' and is forced to 'confront his deepest fears' as he searches out a fabled lost city deep in the Arabian Desert.

We were banging our heads together to work out where devs Naughty Dog could possibly take us this time round and got to thinking: what if there were some Arkham Asylum-style hallucinogenic bits - especially since a chunk of the adventure is set in the fever-inducing sands? Food for thought.

Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception Preview (PS3)
Since modern-day treasure hunter Nathan Drake debuted on the PlayStation 3 back in 2007, many of us have grown rather fond of this everyman hero with the now famous half-tuck shirt and witty banter. In addition to being the lead role in the very polished, adventure-filled Uncharted series, he represented a new beginning for adventure games, a bar that developer Naughty Dog set very high in terms of storyline, graphics and cinematics, one that some may argue injected new life and inspiration into the videogame industry. Uncharted 3 turns up the heat with procedural fire effects
Naughty Dog’s Arne Meyer has described how the esteemed developer is upping the visual ante for Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception, specifically with its inclusion of some swanky procedural fire effects. This technically tricky feature allows fire to realistically eat away at the surrounding architecture, with Meyer stating that players could conceivably take a load off during gameplay and watch a structure (in this case the burning Chateau) slowly burn to a crisp. “Essentially, we’re programming oxygen and then having the fire follow it around the environment,” explained Meyer, in a post on the EU PS Blog. Yesterday’s PlayStation Experience event most certainly ebbed and flowed. By that, I mean some of the things we saw and played were breathtaking and firmly cemented 2011 as PlayStation’s year, and some, like the extended playtime with DC Universe Online, seemed a little redundant – especially given the fact that we’ve already reviewed it.

One of the highlights, though, was meeting Naughty Dogs Arne Meyer (community) and Sam Thompson (producer) – two amicable chaps that were full of enthusiasm for Drake’s latest adventure despite the fact that a) they’d clearly been doing this all day by the time TheSixthAxis got to where they were stationed, and b) most people had already seen what they were about to show.

ut whilst technically it was the same section of Uncharted 3 as we’ve seen before, seeing something up close and personal, first hand, being controlled by a Naughty Dog is quite different from some blurry off-screen YouTube footage. In short, the Chateau level looked even more stunning than I had previously thought.

Go away 2010. You were rubbish. It’s now all about 2011, and the games we can’t wait to play. That’s why throughout the first couple of weeks of January I’m going to be going through some of the games I’m most looking forward to in the coming year. Anyone excited about Uncharted 3?

Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception
The only negative thing we can think of regarding Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception was the fact that Naughty Dog let Jimmy Fallon play it before we did. That, and we’re sort of starting to wonder just how the team will manage to improve upon what was a seamlessly executed blast of a game.

The leap from the original Uncharted to its far superior sequel was tangible. The creases in the experience were ironed out, the pacing was streamlined, and Uncharted 2 became one of the defining games of this generation. But with the core mechanics now set in stone, it’s difficult to see how Naughty Dog will manage to truly surprise us – outside of more spectacular set-pieces moments and twists.

Looks like Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception will not settle for the Middle East as its sole location, as Sony’s own portal for the game notes “a variety of spectacular locations around the world from Europe to the Middle East”. No idea how we missed that in the original PR.

The derelict chateau featured in Jimmy Fallon’s gameplay blow-out last night is presumably set in France, but we’ve still got hopes for some kind of fleeting appearance in the UK. Check out our speculation post for details as to why.

No matter where Drake visits, one of our favourite features from the Uncharted franchise is globe-trotting around the world. We can’t wait to see what Naughty Dog’s got planned. [SOURCE]

By now you've already heard the news because Uncharted 3 has been making waves since early this morning. Numerous publications went live with the hottest announcement of the week. We all knew Uncharted 3 was in the works and now it's official. With a teaser trailer and some screens already spreading over the net, it will soon be time for what we all want to see: gameplay. Luckily for us that wait isn't going to take long at all, in fact the "Late Show" will be the grand host of this extravagant premier.

Do you love games? Do you love Late Night with Jimmy Fallon? Great because the two are getting together again this Monday night, Dec. 13th for the first live demo of Uncharted 3; the third entry in Sony's exclusive, award winning, AAA franchise.

PlayStation Store Update: Naughty Dog's acclaimed actioner gets free single-player sampler, multiplayer DLC; Hustle Kings, Thexder Neo, Assault Heroes also online.

Perhaps the biggest addition to the PlayStation Network Store this week won't cost PlayStation 3 gamers a thing. Those not yet convinced that Naughty Dog's highly acclaimed, multi-award nominated Uncharted 2: Among Thieves is worth their time can pick up a free single-player demo for the game beginning today. The multiplayer-centric PlayStation Heroes pack, which contains seven character skins from other high-profile PS3 exclusives, such as Killzone 2 and Resistance 2, is also available for $4.99.

The PS3 has a trio of original games added to its downloadable library this week as well. VooFoo Studios' Hustle Kings brings billiards to the PS3 for $9.99. Thexder Neo, from Square Enix, is a revamp of the classic PC side-scrolling shooter and features new graphics, features, and modes, as well as six-player online action, for $9.99. Having previously released the game for the Xbox 360 and PC, Wanako Studios will be bringing its top-down shooter Assault Heroes to the PSN this week for $9.99.
