Uncharted: Golden Abyss was the best handheld game of 2012, according to the Golden Joystick Awards. The swish event – which took place in London this afternoon – honoured Sony Bend’s excellent PlayStation Vita adventure ahead of Super Mario 3D Land and Kid Icarus: Uprising. We reckon the Nintendo Life guys might have a thing or two to say about that result.

It wasn’t all good news for PlayStation exclusives, however. Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception missed out on an award in the Best Action Adventure category. That accolade went to Batman: Arkham City, instead. Meanwhile, Journey lost to MineCraft in the Best Downloadable Game group. Battlefield 3 took home the Best Shooter gong, while The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim was the biggest winner of the afternoon – netting awards for Best RPG, Most Memorable Moment, and the coveted Ultimate Game of the Year award.

We've already told you what our favorite games of 2011 are, but the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences apparently needed a bit more time to ruminate on the matter. The final awards will be given at the annual DICE summit in Las Vegas on February 9, giving us all tons of time to pressure the AIAS into giving Rayman Origins the awards for Outstanding Animation and Outstanding Art Direction.

Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception is the belle of the ball this year, with a total of 12 nominations across several categories. Other notable titles include Portal 2 (10 nominations) L.A. Noire (9 nominations), Bastion (3 nominations), and Battlefield 3 (6 nominations). 2010's top game from the AIAS was Mass Effect 2, which walked away with awards in the RPG and storytelling categories. Irrational Games' BioShock Infinite and Naughty Dog's Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception earned four nominations each from Game Critics Awards' annual Best of E3 picks, leading other notable contenders that were showcased at this month's E3 industry convention in Los Angeles.

BioShock Infinite was nominated in the categories best of show, best original game, best PC game and best action-adventure game. Uncharted 3's nominations include best of show, best console game, best action-adventure game and best online mulitplayer game.

The BioShock and Uncharted franchises are no strangers to the Game Critics Awards, which are judged by North American game critics. The original BioShock won best action-adventure game in 2007 and Uncharted 2: Among Thieves won best in show, best console game and best action-adventure game in 2009. id Software's Rage came away with the most E3 Game Critics Awards last year, capturing three awards, but the game only received one nomination this year in the best action game category.

New Images, plot details, multiplayer modes, and everything else you need to know is right here. We even have some ideas of our own on where ‘Uncharted 3′ will take us next.

There is no mistaking it: it is a good time to own a PS3. With only two games, Naughty Dog has left behind their Crash Bandicoot roots and shaped what has become one of the top videogame franchises in the world. Uncharted 2: Among Thieves gave a new definition to cinematic gameplay, and all it took was the teasing of a third game to get fans lining up to pre-order. Now that Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception is official, a new website has been launched detailing the game’s plot, technical advancements, and the addition of an all-new multiplayer mode.

Word on the digital street is that Naugty Dog plans to unveil Uncharted 3 during Spike TV’s Video Game Awards next month. There’s also a good chance Sony will follow up this reveal with an official coming out party for the much anticipated follow up to one this generation's most acclaimed titles.

Sources close to Kotaku have let slip that some members of the press have already seen Uncharted 3 for themselves. Couple that with the fact that Uncharted 2: Among Thieves debuted at the 2008 VGAs, and there’s a very good chance a similar situation will occur at this year’s awards show.

Sony is also hosting an “Exclusive PlayStation 3 Reveal” the day after the VGAs, which will either be a big showcase for Nathan Drake’s latest adventure, or a reveal for something else entirely. I know it won't be Gran Turismo 6, but I kind of want it to be. Is that wrong?
