Inspirational games benefit everyone, especially when it comes to game designers seeking to create the best of the best.
Recently, OPM readers voted Uncharted 2: Among Thieves as the greatest PlayStation game ever and while the competition is ridiculously high, we're not about to question the results. But believe it or not, Naughty Dog boss Evan Wells said his own game wouldn't be #1 on his list...no, in fact, that would be ICO. Wells mentioned that the PS2 classic has acted as a big influence on their current project. He also singled out Grand Theft Auto III as an influential title that had a great impact on the industry:
They're pretty different games, but they've both influenced the industry tremendously. [ICO's] the kind of game - that linear, narrative-driven experience - that we're focused on making right now. Everyone in the office has been influenced by it greatly; it's just a fantastic game."
More high praise, and not long after Fable creator and Lionhead boss Peter Molyneux had some high praise of his own. ICO is truly a masterpiece so when it arrives in flashy new high-def form next year along with Shadow of the Colossus, it will automatically land a spot in your collection. Right? Right.
As for the huge honor given to Uncharted 2 (along with about a thousand Game of the Year Awards from 2009), Wells said- "[Story-driven games] are very difficult and costly, but I hope people are now realizing how story can really elevate the gaming experience." Oh, we've known, Evan. We at PSXE have known for a very long time. It's the people who are forgetting that concern us.
