Old News: Modern Warfare Dominates GPM

With the holiday season just around the corner, the biggest titles of the year are set to make it rain on registers in the next few weeks. Early reviews have begun to pop up in magazines and on websites (including many world's first reviews right here on IGN), and gamers are keeping a close watch on these big titles to see which games deserve their hard earned money.
To track the trends, IGN turns to the stats machines running GameStats.com for info on this year's titles. Already this month, we're seeing some surprises, as well as some big changes from 2008. Here are the current Top Ten most popular games on IGN's network of sites:
Topping the charts unexpectedly is Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. With Halo 3: ODST shipping this week, we were expecting it to easily take own the top slot, as all other Halo titles have in the past (despite the first mixed reviews for the franchise, with many praising its quality but some angry at its brevity.) Instead, another shooter sits atop the list despite the biggest news of the day being that they still can't settle on a name for this Call of Modern Duty Warfare 6, or whatever they want us to call it now. In case by some miracle you have never heard of this game, be sure to check out our hand's on preview of it where we check out the multiplayer aspect of the game. Does Modern Warfare 2's smack-up on ODST prove that Activision and other analysts weren't just talking big when they predicted it might be the best selling title of all-time?
Meanwhile, Uncharted 2 is currently holding its own in the #2 slot, and has been flip-flopping with Halo 3: ODST over the last few weeks. Both games were just reviewed on IGN this weekend, giving them added chart boost on top of their accrued popularity. With Batman: Arkham Asylum already shipping $2.5 million units and more sure to come, it should be no surprise at all that it made this list. Declared by IGN's Greg Miller to be the greatest comic book game of all time, the game continues to be universally acclaimed by both critics and fans alike, earning itself an average of a 9.1 on GameStats. Uncharted 2 reviews are still trickling in, but right now it's the first game of the holiday season to challenge Batman for best press score.
What is surprising about this list is that despite all the hot new titles coming out this holiday, Kratos and his God of War Collection seems to be really popular. Even as a compilation of two old PS2 games, people can't seem to get enough of Kratos. Then again, with God of War and God of War II earning an average of a 9.4 and a 9.2 respectively, plus the addition of trophy support and upscaled HD graphics, can you blame them? PS3 in general looks to have made a roaring attack on the charts after its $299 price cut and slim PS3 release, with a much more even-handed challenge of the Xbox 360 platform than usual in the Top 10.
The Wii, on the other hand, does not show signs of holding onto its glory, with no games currently in the Top 10 and only two in the Top 20. That said, Nintendo's plucky box still has good news in its top title New Super Mario Bros. Wii making a strong showing at #15. Back at E3, there was a lot of concern that, as cute and as fun as the multiplayer platformer looked, the 2D throwback gameplay might not impress the masses. Apparently, those masses are still with Mario, as the #1 and #3 slots on the Wii Popularity Charts are taken up by Nintendo's jumpman. Elsewhere on the charts, the DS game Scribblenauts has drawn itself an audience with a #22 rank, while PSP's Dissidia Final Fantasy at #49 is the most popular game one week away from the PSPgo launch.
