Big Games of E3 2011: Could Sony’s Uncharted 3 Do for 3D Games What Avatar Did for Movies?

With Sony’s PlayStation Network back up, the game company is turning its attention to its big E3 press conference. Sony has an excellent line-up of games, but one that stands out from the crowd in the 3D realm is Naughty Dog’s Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception. The game will be on display at Sony’s E3 booth and should be demonstrated at the press conference in 3D. Jesse Divnich, Vice President of Capital Research for Electronic Entertainment Design and Research (EEDAR), believes this game could do for 3D gaming what Avatar did for 3D Hollywood movies. I’ve personally never been fond of games in stereoscopic 3D,” said Divnich. “Sure, Killzone, Gran Turismo, and MLB: The Show look great in 3D, but I’ve personally never felt that 3D added anything significant to my gaming experience. Now that I have had to chance to experience Uncharted 3 in 3D, that opinion has changed."

Sony and Naughty Dog hosted a pre-E3 event to allow game journalists a hands-on opportunity with the game’s 2D and 3D multiplayer. In addition, a 3D video of a single-player demo was shown. Thanks to the third-person perspective of the new game, the stereo 3D effects really pull players into the environment – much like James Cameron’s Avatar movie did. Sony’s expected to have a single-player level of the game playable in 3D at E3, which will allow journalists from around the world to experience this unique take on the game.

Of course, the majority of people will be playing this game in 2D. Fans of the franchise will embark on a search for the fabled "Atlantis of the Sands." The journey propels fortune hunter Nathan Drake on a trek into the heart of the Arabian Desert, a journey that pits him and his mentor Victor Sullivan against the occult treachery of a shadowy clandestine organization and its ruthless leader. When the terrible secrets of this lost city are unearthed, Drake's quest descends into a desperate bid for survival that strains the limits of his endurance and forces him to confront his deepest fears.
