Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception will offer cooperative gameplay modes like the ones featured in Uncharted 2. Nathan, along with several other characters from the campaign, can work together towards a common goal. That goal is usually taking treasure and shooting thugs along the way. Sony had an Uncharted 3 co-op demo playable at this year's E3. Up to three players can play together, we played as Sully and Nathan, there wasn't a third person to play as the other available character, Elena.
The level takes place in Syria and doesn't directly connect to the main plot of Uncharted 3. Each co-op mission offered a short narrative intro so gamers have an idea of what they're working towards. I played in a room full of people and loud speakers so I couldn't actually here what this narrative was. I guess it's convenient that past Uncharted games have taught me that if there's shiny gold in the room you should take it and run. After I finished the demo I was informed I was trying to reach the top of a tower; I would have figured it out.
The goal of U3's co-op is solve puzzles with recovered treasure. Sully and Drake jump down into a well full of water, they swim under beams and through tunnels before finding a ladder. Once at the surface Nathan and Sully need to find the missing treasure they are looking for.
The level is set in a crumbling villa or castle, with distressed stone bricks scattered around. A mysterious and large statue makes a perfect hiding spot, and the only way to lift it is by working together. While Nathan raises the statue, Sully is able to grab the golden idol that comes into vision. The golden idol can be lobbed like a grenade over walls so you can place it on the pedestals. As Nathan and Sully rest the idol, baddies start to pour in.
The enemies want whatever you want and will close in on you and the idol. They are all men, tall, built, and they dress like they were stranded on a deserted island in their Banana Republic clothes; lots of ripped khakis.
Co-op combat isn't different from regular multiplayer. I did feel like some of the enemies were impervious to my bullets. It took quite a bit of lead to bring down some of the enemies.Since it's a cooperative mode you'll be able to revive each other, use boosts and kickback. Treasure Drops will supply you with boosters like speed and extra damage. If your teammate is unable to revive you, you have the option of committing suicide. I asked the devs how this happens and sadly, you don't get to shoot yourself in the head.
Co-op sounds like a great way to go on an adventure together. You can test out co-op in the private in the Uncharted 3 beta on June 28th or the public beta on July 5tth. You can play the real deal when Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception drops on November 11, 2011.
